Waterdrop’s new M6CG combines 8-stage reverse osmosis filtration, instant hot and cold dispensing, mineral infusion and a detachable glass pitcher in a plug-in countertop system.
Waterdrop has launched the M6CG Hot and Cold Mineral RO System, a new countertop reverse osmosis purifier designed for people who want filtered hot and cold water without installing an under-sink system. The M6CG combines an 8-stage reverse osmosis filtration system, instant temperature control, mineral infusion, programmable dispensing and a detachable 40-ounce glass pitcher in a single countertop appliance. Perhaps most importantly for renters, apartments, offices and RV owners, there’s no plumbing required. Users simply fill the reservoir, plug the system in and begin dispensing filtered water.
8-Stage Reverse Osmosis Filtration
At the center of the M6CG is an 8-stage filtration system built around a 0.0001-micron reverse osmosis membrane. Waterdrop says the system is designed to reduce a range of common contaminants, including TDS, PFOA, PFOS, nitrate, fluoride, arsenic and lead. The company also incorporates an LED-based treatment stage as an additional part of the purification process. According to Waterdrop, filtration performance has been tested by a third-party laboratory.
Instant Hot and Cold Water
The M6CG isn’t simply a countertop RO filter. Water can be dispensed at temperatures ranging from 59°F to 203°F, allowing the system to handle everything from chilled drinking water to coffee, tea, oatmeal and other foods or drinks that normally require a kettle or separate hot-water dispenser. A built-in Favorite Mode allows users to save preferred temperature and volume combinations, while five preset dispensing volumes should make frequently used portions easier to repeat without manually stopping the dispenser.
Mineral-Enhanced RO Water
One criticism often aimed at reverse osmosis systems is that the filtration process removes minerals along with contaminants. Waterdrop addresses that by adding a mineral infusion stage after filtration. The company says the M6CG can add minerals including calcium, magnesium, potassium, zinc, sodium and strontium, primarily with the goal of creating a smoother and more balanced taste. That gives the M6CG an interesting middle ground between conventional RO systems and bottled mineral water.
Detachable 40-Ounce Glass Pitcher
Another feature that separates the M6CG from many countertop dispensers is its removable 40-ounce Maxblue glass pitcher. Instead of having to bring every glass or container directly to the machine, users can fill the pitcher and carry purified water elsewhere in the house, refrigerate it or bring it to the table. It sounds like a simple addition, but it makes the M6CG considerably more flexible as an everyday water system rather than just another countertop appliance.
Separate Clean and Wastewater Tanks
Waterdrop rates the M6CG at a 3:1 pure-to-drain ratio, meaning the system is designed to produce three parts purified water for every one part wastewater. Separate feed-water and wastewater tanks prevent the rejected water from mixing back into the source reservoir. Waterdrop also points out that the rejected water doesn’t necessarily have to go down the drain and can potentially be reused for jobs such as household cleaning or watering plants.
No Installation Required
The biggest advantage of this type of system is installation—or, more accurately, the lack of it. There’s no drilling, plumbing or permanent modification required. That makes the M6CG particularly attractive for apartments, rental properties, offices, dorm rooms, RVs and smaller kitchens, where installing a conventional reverse osmosis system may not be practical. It also means the system can move with you rather than becoming a permanent fixture attached to a sink.
Why It Matters
Countertop reverse osmosis systems are becoming much more interesting because they’re starting to do more than simply filter water. The M6CG is effectively combining several appliances into one unit: an RO filtration system, hot-water dispenser, cold-water dispenser and mineral-water system. That could make the higher upfront cost easier to justify for someone currently buying bottled water or using separate appliances for chilled and near-boiling water.
The detachable glass pitcher is also a smart addition because it solves one of the annoying limitations of many countertop filtration systems—you’re no longer tied to dispensing directly from the machine every time you want purified water somewhere else. Plus my wife doesn’t like plastic for drinking water, glass all day.
The bigger question will be long-term ownership costs, including filter replacement pricing, filter life and how the system performs after months of daily use. But as an all-in-one countertop solution, the M6CG packs a lot into one appliance without requiring anyone to touch a water line.
