Shanling has introduced the SM1.3R HD, a new network music streamer that combines a DAC, headphone amplifier, and streaming platform in one device. Building on the original SM1.3R, this updated model features a larger 5.98-inch 2K display with a resolution of 2560 × 1440 pixels, giving album artwork, playback information, and menus a sharper appearance. It's designed for listeners who want easy access to their favorite streaming services and personal music collections without relying on several separate audio components, making it a practical option for anyone looking to simplify their home audio setup.
Under the hood, the SM1.3R HD uses Shanling's second-generation Kunlun Pro R2R DAC, developed in-house using technology from the company's flagship SCD3.3 SACD player. Unlike more conventional DAC designs, R2R conversion uses a network of precision resistors to convert digital audio signals into analog sound. Shanling's 24-bit implementation uses 212 precision resistors rated at 0.01% accuracy, with the company describing the resulting sound as natural and analog-like. The system also features two 31W toroidal transformers, with separate power supplies for its digital and analog circuitry.

For music streaming, the SM1.3R HD supports Roon Ready, TIDAL Connect, and Qobuz Connect, along with built-in access to Apple Music, Amazon Music, and Spotify. The Android-based system runs on a Rockchip processor with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage, while Wi-Fi 6 and Gigabit Ethernet provide wireless and wired networking options. Listeners who prefer keeping their own music collections can take advantage of an internal M.2 SSD slot, or play files directly from a connected USB drive.
Connectivity is another major part of the package. Coaxial, optical, and USB DAC inputs allow the SM1.3R HD to work with external digital sources, including computers and compatible CD transports. RCA and balanced XLR outputs make it possible to integrate the unit into an existing hi-fi system, while digital outputs allow it to function as a transport for an external DAC. There is also a dedicated headphone amplifier with a front-mounted 6.35mm headphone jack for private listening.
Why It Matters
For anyone building a home audio setup around music streaming, the Shanling SM1.3R HD has quite a bit to offer. With streaming, a built-in DAC, headphone amplification, and support for local music libraries all in one device, there's less need for a complicated setup. The higher-resolution display is also a welcome addition, especially for listeners who prefer browsing their music and controlling playback directly from their audio equipment. And with support for several major streaming services, the SM1.3R HD offers plenty of flexibility regardless of how you prefer to listen.
Of course, at this price it's aimed more at dedicated hi-fi enthusiasts than casual listeners. But for someone looking to build a high-end streaming setup around a single device, it could be a decent option.
